This recipe Chinese barbecue sauce chicken drumettes are sure to be a favourite at your next party.

  1. Combine sauces, shao hsing, ginger and sesame oil in a large glass dish. Add chicken. Season with pepper. Toss. Cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate overnight.
  2. Preheat oven to 200°C/180°C fan-forced. Divide chicken, reserving marinade, between 2 ovenproof dishes (see note). Drizzle with a little marinade. Bake, basting with marinade, for 45 minutes or until chicken is cooked, swapping dishes halfway during cooking.
  3. Meanwhile, cut onion into 8cm lengths. Cut each piece lengthways into thin strips. Place in a bowl of iced water. Stand for 10 minutes to curl. Drain well.
  4. Place chicken on a platter. Sprinkle with onion. Serve.
