Watermelon whale

Cooking Child Watermelon whale

Here is the best way to guarantee your kids have a whale of a time at their birthday party, with this clever watermelon whale fruit centrepiece!

  1. Place jelly crystals in a heatproof bowl. Add boiling water. Whisk until crystals have dissolved. Stir in 800ml cold water. Cover. Refrigerate for 4 hours or until set.
  2. Place watermelon on a large chopping board. Using a large, sharp knife, cut 10cm in from 1 end of the watermelon, on an angle to allow watermelon to stand upright. Cut a 10cm triangle from slice of watermelon to form a fin. Set aside. Place watermelon, cut-side down, on chopping board.
  3. Using picture as a guide, cut a large wedge to form mouth (reserve wedge for another use). Using a vegetable peeler, remove skin around cut edges to form a 2.5cm wide strip of white. Leaving the roof of the mouth intact, use a large metal spoon to scoop out the watermelon (try to take out big chunks). Cut watermelon flesh into 2cm pieces.
  4. Place watermelon whale on a large tray. Reserve 2 blueberries. Combine 5 cups watermelon pieces with strawberries and remaining blueberries in a bowl. Spoon the berry and watermelon mixture into the watermelon whale (see note).
  5. Using the picture as a guide, use a melon baller to cut eyes (be careful not to cut all the way through). Using a small sharp knife scrape 5mm of skin around eyes. Use toothpicks to secure blueberries inside eyes. Use skewer to secure fin to watermelon whale. Spoon jelly into the tray around whale. Serve.
