To make this dish at home by prescription from the author Gomer would need: 1 cup dried red split lentils, washed, drained, 4 cups water, 3 thin slices fresh ginger, 1/2 tsp ground turmeric, 1/4 cup canola oil , 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp ground coriander, 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper .

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dried red split lentils, washed, drained 
  • 4 cups water 
  • 3 thin slices fresh ginger 
  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric 
  • 1/4 cup canola oil 
  • 1 tsp ground cumin 
  • 1 tsp ground coriander 
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper 

Instructions

  1. Place lentils and water into a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to the boil. Use a spoon to skim any residue from surface.
  2. Reduce heat to low. Add ginger and turmeric. Partially cover with a lid. Simmer for 1 hour. Cook, stirring, for a further 30 minutes or until lentils are tender.
  3. Heat oil in a small frying pan over high heat. Add cumin, coriander and cayenne pepper. Cook for 30 seconds. Stir into lentils. Season with salt. Serve.
